JuneShine and Sebago Brewing Recover Own CO2 to Cut Costs, Improve Supply Chain Resilience and Sustainability

JuneShine located in San Diego, California, and Sebago Brewing located in Gorham, Maine, are expanding their sustainability efforts while improving quality and efficiency by installing DALUM CO2 recovery systems. This technology enables them to reduce their environmental impact and secure control over their CO2 supply, shielding them from a volatile market and save on CO2 purchase expenditures.  DALUM estimates that roughly 7-8 lbs. of CO2 can be recovered per barrel of beer brewed depending on alcohol content and brewing practices.

JuneShine as the First Kombucha Brewery to Install CO2 recovery technology

In San Diego, JuneShine is a trailblazer in sustainability in the kombucha community. They’re the first to install a small-scale CO2 recovery system, supporting their commitment to and goal towards zero-waste production.

“The CO2 recovery technology from DALUM allows us to capture and reuse CO2 directly from our fermentation, ensuring it’s pure, natural, and aligned with our sustainability goals,” said Luke Suttmiller, JuneShine’s Sustainability Manager and Head Brewer.

According to Chey Kiedrowski, DALUM USA Install Expert and engineer, the 30 lbs./hr. DALUM CO2 Recovery Plant is conservatively estimated to capture over 200,000+ lbs. of CO₂ each year for JuneShine and recovered over 4,200 lbs. of liquid CO2 within the first week of commissioning.

Sebago Brewing Secures Own CO2 Supply

For over 25 years, Sebago Brewing has been a leader in Maine’s craft beer scene. Now, with a DALUM CO2 Recovery Plant installed at their Gorham brewery, they will be protected from potential future CO2 shortages and price increases, while enhancing product quality and lowering carbon footprint. The new system captures CO2 from fermentation, purifies it to over 99.9% beverage-grade quality, and reuses it in their beer.

“This technology is not only environmentally sound but a cost-saving measure for us that gives us even more control of our supply chain,” said co-founder Kai Adams.

By cutting the need to transport CO2, Sebago expects to prevent the release of 128,000 lbs. of CO2 annually.

A Reliable and Known Source of CO2

The projects at Sebago and JuneShine show how CO2 recovery technology can significantly improve sustainability, product enhancement, and cost-efficiency. By capturing and reusing their own CO2, they’re building more resilient operations, while furthering their sustainability goals.

With DALUM CO2 Recovery Plants, Sebago and JuneShine gain a reliable source of natural CO2. Unlike industrial CO2, which lacks transparency about origin and composition, their recovered CO2 is completely traceable – produced in-house and exceeding the highest beverage-grade standards. This gives the same care and attention to CO2 as we give to other key ingredients like grains, hops, and water.
